Professor Barry Hough, BU Professorial Inaugural Lecture

Coleridge in Malta: The laws and public notices of Coleridge's Malta period

After leaving office as Acting Public Secretary in Malta, Coleridge complained that he knew “by heart the awkward & wicked machinery by which all our affairs abroad are carried on”. In this lecture, and drawing on previously undiscovered archives, Professor Barry Hough will explore one of the crises of 1805, which prompted Coleridge’s dilemma as to whether governmental action should ever be inconsistent with, and prevail over, the published laws.
