Stairs, Corridor and Bedroom
Stairs - Original spiral stairs lead to the first floor of the cottage and are set within the thickness of the wall which accommodates the former kitchen hearth.
Corridor - The corridor may have existed in
Coleridge's time, or may have been partitioned from the
adjoining bedroom at a later date to provide greater
privacy. The corridor contains a mahogany open cradle of
the kind that may have been used for Hartley. On one wall
are engravings of Watchet, Dunster, and the Valley of the
Rocks, which were all stopping points on the famous
'Ancient Mariner' walk in November 1797. On the other wall
are engravings of Ottery church, where Coleridge was
baptised, and of Alfoxden.
The bedroom has been furnished to look as it may
have done in Coleridge's day. Its contents include an 18th
century table and chair, a Jacobean child's high chair in
oak. a trunk and a bed.
